The red medical cross and/or any colour of the medical cross has been an interesting and favorite symbol of mine. To me, when I see that sign, I think of help, or a cure. But then when I combine that image with one that symbolizes death it brings up a topic that I find fascinating. Cure by death.
As far as the blood splatters (brushes by ninja-artist, I believe), It looks cool against a sybmol that symbolizes a cure. It was kindof inspired by that movie Event Horizon. Yes, I know it came out in like 97, but bloody walls in futuristic spaceships turns me on, I'm sorry.
